Internet WHORE My Ass!!
If you were a true internet WHORE you'd be online right now! Bah. There went that idea right out the window.
Ah the end of a long stressful weekend. I'm nervous about what the week is going to bring!
When we called the vet yesterday morning, they told us that they had decided not to do surgery on our dog Corey (a female) because they wanted to keep her on fluids and antibiotics a bit longer. They said they'd do it yesterday afternoon (instead of the night before last like they intended) and that they'd call us and let us know how it went. Well we waited and waited. No call. Mom and Dad were in crappy moods, which of course was because they were worried. I tried to just stay to myself. Then around 9:30pm last night I got fed up with waiting. So I called the answering service because neither one of them would do it. Like damn, what do you think the answering service is going to curse you or something? Stupid!!
As it turns out, the vet that did the surgery called us back about ten minutes later and talked to me. He said that she went through the surgery ok and was having an 'uneventful' recovery. Which is good. He said he thought she'd be fine. We have to keep a close eye on her the next few weeks to make sure she heals and to make sure that she isn't still sick from infection spreading or anything. Then he reminded me to tell everyone who has a female dog intact (not spayed) to HAVE THEM FIXED. Let me tell you why......
What Corey had was a condition called "PYOMETRA" which is an infection of the uterus. Female dogs who have not been spayed have a very good chance of getting this during their lifetime; older dogs especially run a high risk. What happens is the uterine horns (which are usually very small) get infected after the animal goes into heat and slowly fill up with pus. This causes them to swell. The vet told us that Corey's uterus horns were an inch and a half in diameter. That's huge! Some dogs have had them removed in excess of 6 pounds! What's hard about this condition is that it's so hard to discover. By the time the dogs show outward signs of being ill they are full of infection inside and are much much sicker than the owners realize. If not taken care of in time, the uterine walls could rupture, spilling the pus and infection into the abdominal cavity. There's also a really high chance of kidney/bladder infections and shock. What's worse is that this turns out to be a VERY common sickness among female intact dogs and could be avoided completely if owners spay their dogs. Corey was the first dog that we've ever had that we have never had fixed. We kept meaning to have it done, but just never got around to it and so in a way we are to blame for her sickness. Although if we had known about pyometra we would have never let her get by without being spayed! So I encourage anyone who knows someone with female dogs to tell them about this condition and to have their dogs spayed. Spaying also reduces the risk of their dogs developing mammary gland cancer. Although this is a very common illness, it is not something to be taken lightly. This sickness is FATAL if not taken care of. They won't just get over this folks. It will kill them and they will die after being in a substantial amount of pain. So please please take care of them and don't learn the hard way like my family has.
Ok, stepping off of my soapbox now.... I had a fun day today. I went with a friend to meet some people at a state park. I joined this email list a while back for local pagans/wiccans in my area and the people all decided to get together and meet. I was a little concerned about what types of people it would be, because I've met some REAL psychos. LOL. But everyone turned out to be really great and I was glad I went. There was 8 of us total that showed up, all females and one guy. We stayed out there chatting together for almost 4 hours and we decided to plan to get together again soon. I think we're going to try having mainly a women's group with possibly a male or two if they decide to come back. heh. We're not forming a coven or anything (Besides I'm not Wiccan, just pagan), we're just going to start a 'learning group' and study things together. I'm really looking forward to it! Especially since everyone was so nice and seem well grounded. It'll be fun to have people here of like mind to do things with and get together with. YAY! I'm hoping that it's a sign that a new phase in my life is starting. I have been feeling stagnant somewhat lately on a spiritual level and I'm SO glad at the possibility of getting back on track with that. We'll see how it goes.
That's about it. Long post I know, so sorry! Until next time... - posted by Loki's Concubine @ 7:58 PM
